A CALL FOR ACTION
SEEDS OF GREED
In an unprecedented pact, the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture and Monsanto's Delta and Pine Land Co. have patented a technology that could halt the farming tradition of planting seeds saved from the harvest. A "terminator" gene causes a seed to sterilize its offspring, forcing farmers to buy new seeds each season. Many scientists are concerned that the gene may spread in pollen to other plants, sterilizing nature as well.
STOP buying Monsanto products, including seeds, Ortho and Roundup pesticides, G.D. Searle pharmaceuticals, and foods/drinks with aspartame (Nutrasweet, Equal) or Simplesse (a fat substitute).
START choosing seeds from companies who have pledged not to use terminator genes. Call other companies to say you won't buy their seeds if they "terminate."
WRITE to demand that commercial development of the terminator gene be denied:
1) Sec'y Dan Glickman, USDA, Washington, DC 20250 2) Hon. Robert F. Smith, Chair, Ag. Cmte., U.S. House, Washington, DC 20515 3) Hon. Richard G. Lugar, Chair, Ag. Cmte., U.S. Senate, Washington, DC 20510
Or, sign the letter on the Rural Advancement Foundation International (RAFI) website, which will be forwarded to the above, RAFI
